Donald Earl Adkins

Ashton, IA

     Donald Adkins age 85 of Ashton, IA, died on Monday, October 25, 2021, at his home.    

     Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022, at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Ashton, IA, with Father Siby Punnoose officiating. There will be military honors by William Ben Hoffman American Legion Post No. 290 of Ashton.

     Don, the oldest of five children born to James and Margurite (Thom) Adkins, was born in Sioux Falls, SD. He began his education in Sioux Falls and continued it at St. Joseph’s School in Ashton in 1943 when the family moved to Ashton and finished it during his time in the Navy from 1956 to 1960. 
     While stationed in the Philippines, he met his wife, Ester, and they were married there in 1960 before coming to the States. After returning to the States, they made their home in Clarion, IA, where Don worked as a machinist and part-time at a service station. He then went into carpentry and drove a school bus.
     They moved to Ashton in 1980, and he began farming on the Thom farm and retired from farming in 2018. Don also served as mayor of Ashton for a period of time. Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion.

     Don is survived by his two sisters, Carol Schlim Roberts and Linda (David) Carlson; one aunt, Angeline Thom; and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

     He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; brothers, Paul and David; and nephews Daniel and Richard.
