     Donald Carlson age 89 of Sheldon, Iowa, formerly of Matlock, died Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Sanford Sheldon Care Center.

     A graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 22nd at Greenwood Cemetery in Matlock, IA, with Rev. John Pea officiating.

     Donald Burt Carlson was born May 1, 1929 in Avoca, Minnesota, the son of Gustav and Sophie (Olson) Carlson. Don was raised in the Avoca area and attended Avoca Public School. He joined the United States Army in 1948, spending over a year in Korea before his honorable discharge in 1950.  On December 16, 1959 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Hollander in Sioux County, IA.  The couple lived in the Avoca area, and then moved to Matlock in 1968, where they raised their family. Don was a trucker for many trucking firms in the area. He lived in Matlock until 2014, when he moved into the nursing home in Sheldon.

     He enjoyed overhauling cars, and taking things apart to fix them. Don had a love for cats, and enjoyed the company from his grandchildren and family.

     He is survived by his two children; Lori (Gary) Korthals of George, IA, Dean (Cindy) Carlson of Oelwein, IA; six grandchildren Codie (Molly) Korthals, Darci (Justin) Tiedemann, Nathaniel Carlson, Ashleigh Carlson, Kailee Carlson, and Paige Kruger; one great grandchild, William Korthals; sisters, brothers, and extended family.

     He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Marilyn; son Donald Lee; grandchildren Lance and Lonnie Korthals; brothers Clarence, Truman, Delmont, Duane, Raymond, George Carlson; an infant brother; sisters Edna Barron, Elizabeth Anderson, and Gladys Sears.
