Donald Grotluschen age 90 of George, Iowa died Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 24th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in George, IA with Rev. Sarah Deutsch, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George, IA.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 23rd from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George.
Donald Ben Grotluschen was born January 7, 1929 at Doon, Iowa, the son of Ben and Tillie (Snuttjer) Grotluschen. Don grew up on a farm, helping his father and brother, Ervie with the day to day operation of the farm. He went to country school through 8th grade. After his schooling Don continued helping with the farm.
Don a was united in marriage on February 27, 1953 to Myrte (Johnson) at Eastside Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. He and Myrt lived on the family farm for the first 3 years, moving to George, IA in 1956. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Wendy and Mary. Don was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in George. Don was a proud self-taught sign painter, working 32 years for Sudenga Industries. He did all the lettering on the bulk body boxes and painted for various businesses around the area. He worked a few years after retirement at Siebring Manufacturing in George.
Those who knew Don enjoyed his sense of humor. He loved dancing, listening to music and traveling, especially to the Black Hills.
On December 29, 2003 Don’s wife Myrtle died. Don continued living in George and stayed active with his painting. On October 11, 2013 Don was married to Dixie Janssen in George, IA. Dixie died on August 18, 2017.
Don died at the Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at the age of 90. Don is survived by his daughter, Wendy Smith and her husband, Jack of George, IA; 3 granddaughters, Amber London of George, IA, Amy and her husband, Randy Phelps of George, IA and Amanda and her husband, Craig Denny of George, IA; 5 great-grandchildren, Kennedy London, Kaitlyn and Colin Phelps and Jack and Amelia Denny; step-children, Dan and Tammy Janssen of Lake Wilson, MN, Mike and Panda Heston of Windom, MN, Randy Mueller of Duluth, MN and Pat and Donna Janssen of Worthington, MN; brother-in-law, Gerald and his wife, Ruth Johnson of Isle, MN; and many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Tillie Grotluschen; his first wife of fifty years, Myrtle Grotluschen; second wife, Dixie Grotluschen; daughter, Mary Grotluschen; brother, Erwin Grotluschen; sister, Kathryn Schaa; sister-in-law, Marlys Grotluschen; and brother-in-law, Vernon Schaa.
