Donald Leo Roemen was born April 28, 1927, on the farm in Larchwood, Iowa to Leo and Alberta (Van Acken). He left school at a young age to work on the family farm. He helped his father with custom farming, running the largest self-propelled combine in Lyon County in 1948 and plowing with their Model L Case. His life’s passion was the Roemen Family Farm. The quarter of land was diverse and efficient. The animals consumed only what he grew including corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and oats. He raised cattle, hogs, chickens, and Holstein dairy cows, which he was most proud of. He worked this land every day, even up to a year before his passing. His biggest accomplishment was stewarding the farm during tough times and keeping it in the Roemen name for more than 100 years. He rests happily knowing that it’s going to continue for the next 100 years.
He could not do this hard work alone. He married Julianna Snyders on May 29, 1950. Their loving example of marriage lasted 65 years. He visited her every day at Fellowship Village until her death. The staff was always touched by his commitment to her. They were both longtime members of St. Mary’s church and loved attending church functions. Mom would be happy knowing Dad made it 95 years without swallowing his toothpick while sleeping and snoring in his chair!
Dad was not all about work. He would dance with mom to Lawrence Welk around and around in the living room. He would play with us kids, giving horseback rides always ending in a buck off for sure! He started our love of fishing by taking us to Lake Brant every year as a treat after corn planting was done. He liked to attend the large family reunions in Larchwood Park. Dad had a love for dogs, and he delighted in spoiling them.
The family would like to thank Fellowship Village and Colleen Miles for the excellent care given to both of our parents.
