Dorothy McCormack, age 91 of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday, October 8, 2018, at Lyon Specialty Care, in Rock Rapids.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13th, at United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Reverend Kathy Sides officiating. Private family burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery of Rock Rapids.
Visitation will be Friday, October 12th from 2:00-8:00 p.m. with the family present 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. There will be a 7:00 p.m. service by the VFW Womens Auxillary.
Dorothy McCormack, daughter of John and Emma (Lutjens) Tiedeman was born January 15, 1927 at the farm home northeast of Hull, Iowa. She attended Sheridan Township rural school through Spring of 1938 before moving to Rock Rapids. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1944. A few weeks after graduation she boarded a train for Washington, D.C. where she worked in the Document Section typing pool of the F.B.I. She returned to Rock Rapids in 1945 and worked at the Federal Land Bank/Production Credit offices until Winter of 1946 when she was hospitalized with Polio for six weeks.
On May 6, 1947 she was united in marriage to Herbert Pierce McCormack. After marriage she was a homemaker and bookkeeper for her husband’s transportation business. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids and taught Sunday School, served on various boards and committees in the church and community. Also, she served on the City Council from1970 through 1977, the Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital Association Board and the Mural Society of Rock Rapids.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathryn McCormack of Omaha, NE and Marie D. Schmidt of Rock Rapids, IA; a son, Marian J. (wife, Linda) McCormack of Rock Rapids, IA; a granddaughter, Claire Rosales of Omaha, NE; four great-grandchildren, Brandon, Danya, Josie and Melanie; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emma Tiedeman; husband, Herbert McCormack; son, Marvin McCormack; two sisters, Bertha Anderson and Lorie Etta Thompson; four brothers, Berend, Walter, Ferd and Hubert.
