Elaine June Childress

Elaine Childress, age 92 of Alvord, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at Fellowship Village in Inwood, Iowa.  

A memorial service will be at 1:30 PM, Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, Iowa with Pastor Rob Horstman, officiating.  Burial will follow in Christ Lutheran, Alvord Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Elaine June Childress was born on January 3, 1933, on her family farm near Alvord, Iowa, to her parents Edwin and Hilda (Stoltenberg) Kroeger.

Elaine attended Alvord Country School and Christ Lutheran Church. She graduated from Alvord High School where she was a guard on the basketball team.

Elaine married George Edward Childress on November 22, 1953. She enjoyed being a farm housewife and mother to Dave, Randy, Rick, Nancy and Barb. Her tasks on the farm kept her busy preparing meals for the men, baking, gardening and canning, raising chickens, and caring for the family.

She loved sewing clothes for her kids and for Barbie dolls, entering photography in the Lyon County Fair, attending her children's and grandchildren's sporting events, dancing at the VFW, and feeding and birdwatching. She avidly kept up on great grandchildren sporting events while in the home through the newspaper.

Elaine taught Sunday school, was a 4-H leader, cleaned the church and worked for several years at the Valley State Bank.

Elaine became a resident of Fellowship Village in June of 2021. Elaine passed on February, 25, 2025 at the age of 92.

She is survived by four children, Dave Childress (Carol) of Larchwood, Rick Childress (Birdie) of Sioux Falls, Nancy Kerkvliet (Ken) of Larchwood, Barb Geigle of Yankton, Cindy Childress Nagel (Dan) of Larchwood, 15 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and her sister, Melva Kohnen of Sioux City. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband George, son Randy and son-in-law Sam.
