Gary "Dewey" Lee Grotewold

Larchwood, Iowa 

     Gary “Dewey” Grotewold, age 78, of Larchwood, Iowa, died Sunday, October 22, 2023, at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

     Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, October 26th at the United Church of Christ of Larchwood, IA, with Pastor Tim Voigt officiating. Burial will follow at Larchwood Cemetery.

     Visitation will be Wednesday, October 25th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, at the United Church of Christ of Larchwood.

     Arrangements are in the care of the Jurrens Funeral Home of Larchwood, IA.

     Gary Lee “Dewey” Grotewold was born November 9, 1944, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the son of Harry J. and Alma S. (Rorem) Grotewold. He was raised near Larchwood and attended Larchwood Public Schools and graduated from West Lyon High School in 1963. After high school Dewey joined the South Dakota National Guard. He was discharged in May of 1971.  

     He was united in marriage to Marilyn Hestand on August 31, 1968, at Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Together they lived in various places, such as Larchwood, Sioux Falls, and Rock Rapids, before settling down in 1981, returning back to Larchwood, where he remained until his death.

     Dewey worked in sales for many years for various companies throughout his career. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Larchwood. He also was a member of Meadow Acres Golf Course, where he served as a past board member, and the Larchwood Fire Department. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and following his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting activities. 

     Papa Dewey loved family time with his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. He played many rounds of golf with his family and friends and was blessed with 2 holes-in-one.

     He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn Grotewold of Larchwood, IA; his children, Michele (Dave) Gulk of Larchwood, IA, Kent Grotewold of Burnsville, MN, Sean (Darcy) Grotewold, Aaron (Dena) Grotewold, Heather (Jaden) Lorenzen and Charley Reinke, all of Larchwood, IA; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sister, Betty Kramer of Rock Rapids, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. 

     He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Alma Grotewold; and brother, Robert “Bob” Grotewold.
