Gayla Lynn Vincent

     Gayla Lynn Vincent (North) age 71 of Rock Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Huron, SD died on Sunday May 19, 2024 at her daughter’s residence in Rock Rapids, IA.  

     Family services will be later this spring in Huron, SD.

     Gayla Lynn Vincent (North) was born August 14, 1952, in Mitchell, SD, the daughter of Leon “Ole” and Agnes (Herron) North. She was raised in Huron, SD. She attended country school until 8th grade and was unable to continue because of the unexpected death of her mother. She helped with the household chores.

      On May 15, 1971, Gayla was married to David Sonne in Mitchell, SD. They started living in Ethan, SD, then moved to Burbank, SD, where they lived until 1983. Then moved back to Ethan, SD until 1988 when Dave and Gayla divorced, at which time Gayla and the kids moved to Huron, SD. In 2012 Gayla was diagnosed with cancer and she battled the disease on and off for the rest of her life. In 2017, due to failing health she moved to Rock Rapids to be closer to her daughter, Wanda. She had her own apartment just a few blocks away from her daughter Wanda and son in law Dan. She loved her apartment and her first Christmas in it.  She was so excited to go Christmas shopping for all her grandchildren for the first time. Gayla loved to reserve the community room in her apartment building for family holidays, and of course she would always invite any of her friends/neighbors to come in and eat. She was very excited and proud to introduce her family to them. 

     Gayla spent most of her adult life as a homemaker. She was a people person (social butterfly) and most of all loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved to play cards with her friends in the community room of her apartment building. She especially loved her little chihuahua Angel. 

     She is survived by three children, Wanda (Dan) Wubbena of Rock Rapids, IA, John (Angel) Sonne of Ethan, SD,  and Terry (Dallas) Baseler of Columbia, SC;  a daughter-in-law, Mashell Sonne of Tea, SD; eleven grandchildren, Brittany (Dustin) Wagner, Paul Busch, Jake (Jessica) Schroeder, Nikita Donavan, Anthony Donavan, Tabitha Sonne, Makayla Sonne, Gabby Sonne, C.J. Sonne, Tina Baseler and D.J. Baseler;  2 step-grandchildren Paul (Jennifer) Wubbena and Noel(Holly) Wubbena; eleven great-grandchildren; step-mother Betty North of Britton, SD, step-brothers, Louis (Pam) Stranski, Fred Stranski and Bert Stranski, all of Mitchell, SD; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family.

     She was preceded by her parents, Leon “Ole” and Agnes; two sister, Nancy Mead and Georgann Grier; and two brothers, Gene Bluhm and Robert Breen; Sister-in-law Jean Gaulke; a niece, Ginger Mead, and her chihuahua Angel.
