Gertrude Scholten age 93 of Sheldon, IA formerly of George, IA died Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, IA.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 8, from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Saturday, June 9 at the Lyon County First Presbyterian Church of George, Iowa, with Pastor Brian Schafer officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery of George, IA.
The Scholten family prefer memorials be directed to the Lyon County First Presbyterian Church.
Gertrude “Gert” Scholten was born June 20, 1924 in Hull, Iowa. She was the youngest of six children born to Benjamin and Theresa (Boogerd) Vander Kooi. She received her education and graduated in 1941 from Western Christian High School in Hull. Gert then worked as a telephone operator in Hull. She met her future husband while chivareeing.
Gert was united in marriage to Gerald “Gene” Scholten on December 29, 1948 in her parent’s home in Hull, IA. They spent their next 60 years farming together on the family farm south of George, Iowa. While there they raised their four children: Roger, Janice, Gary and Ruth. She was a very loving mother and enjoyed spending time with family. She loved playing games, cards and putting together puzzles and word searches. Her grandchildren loved her homemade apple pie and goodies. She was primarily a homemaker, but she was also employed at the Good Samaritan Center in George for 16 years. She volunteered at the George Museum and was an avid reader, studying the Bible faithfully. Gert was very involved at church and served as a Sunday school teacher and various committees and ladies groups in George at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church, Ebenezer Presbyterian Church and the Hope Reformed Church. She was known for her warm smile and friendly disposition.
Gert and Gene moved into George and celebrated 64 years of marriage together. Gene preceded her in death in June 2013. She moved to Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon in 2016 to be closer to her daughters.
She is survived by her children: son, Roger (Valerie) Scholten of Ruther Glen, VA; daughter, Janice (Randy)Huss of Ashton, IA; son, Gary (Lynette) Scholten of Brandon, SD; and daughter Ruth Scholten of Sheldon, IA; her grandchildren: Keith (Jennifer) Scholten of Mechanicsville, VA and their children, Brian, Ethan and Andrew Scholten; Jennifer (Benji) Snyder and their children Evie, Noelle, Quentin and Zoey of Dover, DE; Brian (Val) Huss of Denver, CO; Ben and Kyle Huss, both of Ashton. IA; Kevin (Emily) Huss and their daughter, Rylin of Alleman, IA; Kory (Ty) Scholten of Sioux Falls, SD; Megan Scholten and special friend Seth Lundstrom of Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers-in-law: Duane Buttenob of Aurelia, IA and Leonard (Roberta) Scholten of Sioux Falls, SD.
Gert was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Theresa; her husband, Gene; two brothers: William (Grace) Vander Kooi and James (Velma) Vander Kooi; three sisters: Agnes (Wilfred) Wortman, Josie (Jake) Van Berkum and Sarah (Jake) Timmer as well as seven in-laws from the Scholten family.
