     Gilbert “Gib” Blochowitz age 95 of Sibley, Iowa passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Country View Manor in Sibley.

     Funeral service will take place at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley, Iowa with Pastor Steve Swenson, officiating.  Burial will follow in Holman Township Cemetery of Sibley.  

     Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.

     Gilbert Johannes Blochowitz Sr. was born May 28, 1927, in Raymond, Nebraska to Albert and Henny (Luers) Blochowitz.  He attended school in Raymond until the 8th grade when his family moved to a farm by Bigelow, Minnesota where he graduated in 1944.

    He was in the United States Army where he served at the end of World War II.  He was honorably discharged on March 25, 1948.

    On April 15, 1950, Gib was united in marriage to Margie Kruger in Tracy, Minnesota.  To this union four children were born.  They farmed and raised their children on a farm south of Bigelow, Minnesota.  The farm is still family operated.  They remained together on the farm until 2015.  Margie passed away August 20, 2020.

    Gilbert was a member of VFW, Evangelical Lutheran Church, and was a past 4-H leader.  He enjoyed farming, his cats and dogs, and working with cattle.  He also enjoyed bowling, going to eat at Perkins or the Blue Line Truck stop, and especially eating ice cream and chocolate, and listening to polka music.  He could tell you directions when traveling to Wisconsin and Nebraska, but he did not pass that trait onto his children.

    His family was important to him as he truly loved to spend time with the grandchildren and all his family members.  His family remembers him as a very loving and caring person.

    Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Gilbert Jr. (Janell) Blochowitz of Black Creek, WI, Janice (Bryngelson) Grave of Sibley, IA, Vicki (Doug) Oldenkamp of Sheldon, IA, Mike (Dawn) Blochowitz of Sibley, IA; 13 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 18 great great grandchildren; siblings, Adith Buntjer of Black Creek, WI, Darlene Eilders of CA; sister-in-law, Donna Blochowitz of Fisco, TX; along with many extended family and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie; parents, Albert and Henny; grandson, Jason Bryngelson; great granddaughter, Kaliegh Jones;  son-in-law, Dick Grave; parents-in-law, George and Dorothy Kruger; brother, Roland Blochowitz; and brothers-in-law, George Kruger, Butch Kruger, Merle Buntjer, and John Eilders.
