Glen D "Moon" Foltz

October 16, 1928 — January 26, 2021

Glen “Moon” Foltz age 92 of Rock Rapids, IA died Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at his home in Rock Rapids, IA.

Celebration of Life will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA.

Glen D (Moon) Foltz, Jr. was born October 16, 1928 to Glen D and Anna Gurina (Johnson) Foltz on a farm just west of Inwood, IA.  The family lived in the Larchwood, IA, area for several years.  When Glen was in elementary school his father took a job as a Lyon County Deputy and moved the family to Rock Rapids.  Glen told of enjoying 4 years of living in the Lyon County Jail when his father was the Sheriff in the early 1940’s.

Glen graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1946 and married his high school sweetheart, Leota Winter, on January 25, 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA.  That began a 71 year marriage that ended on February 9, 2019, when Leota passed away.  Leota struggled with her health late in life, and Glen was a loving and tireless caregiver.  They had a wonderful life together raising 5 children.  Always busy with work and family, they tirelessly supported their children’s activities, and were active in their church and in their community.  They were best friends and lifelong dance partners.  In the 1960’s, they purchased a summer cabin on East Battle Lake in Minnesota, and for over 40 years their children and grandchildren enjoyed time with them at the cabin.  The family talks often of the wonderful memories of being with grandpa and grandma at the lake.

Glen’s father was a talented “do anything” type of guy, so Glen Jr came by that skill naturally.  Glen Sr began to work in the construction business after being sheriff and Moon, as he was known by everyone, joined him after high school and together they operated Glen D Foltz & Son Construction until Glen Sr passed away in 1963.  Moon continued the business until his retirement.  He talked often of the wonderful, talented men who worked with and for them.  Those relationships were special to him.  He loved people and his sincerity came naturally and drew people to him.  His coffee friends enjoyed his quick wit and were often the target of his good-natured zingers.  His family will greatly miss the easy way he loved and his wonderful sense of humor.  He was magic to them.  Blessed be the memory of Glen D Foltz, Jr.

Glen is survived by 5 children, Susan (Gregory) Sutton of Harrodsburg, KY, David (Barbara) Foltz of Rock Rapids, IA, Peggy (Gregory) Kruger of Ellsworth, MN, Lisa (Kirk) Miller of Willard, MO, and Glen Daniel (Elizabeth Griffin) of St Louis Park, MN; 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Nema Grafing of Rock Rapids, IA, and Janet (Howard) Prieb of Anoka, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Glen was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Leota Foltz; his parents, Glen and Anna Foltz, infant son Michael Glen, sister Ruth Stewart and brother-in- law Charles, sister Betty Schol and brother-in-law Robert, and brother-in-law Arthur Grafing.
