Harold Korthals, age 89 of George, IA died Saturday, August 22, 2020 at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
A Private Family Burial will take place at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA with military honors by Jack Sauter American Legion Post No. 404. A memorial service will take place at a later date.
Visitation will be Friday, August 28th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at Jurrens Funeral Home of George, IA. The family will not be present. Social distancing will be followed.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials made to the family to be designated at a later date.
Harold Korthals was born September 18, 1930 to Gerrit and Ida (DeWeerd) Korthals on the family farm near George, Iowa. He attended Country School. In August of 1952 Harold was inducted to the United States Army. He was in the Communications division and served in the Korean War. He received the Korean Service medal with 2 Bronze Stars. After his active duty he continued his service transferring to the Army Reserve. On August 4, 1954 Harold was united in marriage to Ardis Eberline at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George. Together they raised four children on the family farm. Harold was a hardworking farmer his entire life.
Harold was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed volunteering at the Wheelchair Express, golfing, camping and fishing with family and friends, biking and walking the George trail, gardening, playing cards, and feeding his birds. Harold really enjoyed watching Cardinals Baseball but would resort to watching the Twins if the Cardinals were not on. Harold cared for all the residents in the nursing home. His family was very important to him and he will be greatly missed.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Judy (Daryl) Arzdorf of Mankato, MN, Nancy Frantz of Sioux Falls, SD, David (Twyla) Korthals of George, IA, and Ruth (Tim) Kruger of George, IA; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brothers, John (Mary) Korthals; Alfred Korthals; Edward Korthals; and sister-in-law, Floy Korthals; along with many extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ardis (Eberline) Korthals; parents, Gerrit and Ida Korthals; brothers, Leonard in infancy, Marion, Albert and Ronald; sisters, Gertrude in infancy, Henrietta, Jeanette, Leona and Edith; and son-in-law, Bruce Frantz.
