Helen Heiman, age 96 of Sibley, IA died Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at the Country View Manor in Sibley, IA
A memorial mass will be 10:30 AM Friday, August 2, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, IA with Ftr. Siby Punnoose, celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Ashton.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service with the family present at the church.
Helen Genevieve Heiman was born August 18, 1922, the daughter of Henry and Adelaide (Kasperbauer) Schechinger. She was born and raised in Carroll, Iowa. She attended St. Angela’s Acadamy, an all girl’s school.
Helen was united in marriage to Jack Heiman in Richmont, California in 1943. Jack and Helen spent three years living in Chicago, North Carolina, New York City, and Pascagoula, Florida; all while Jack was serving his country in the Navy. After his discharge they moved to Arcadia where they owned an operated a grocery store for three years. They then moved to Ashton in 1947 where Jack started Heiman Fire Equipment, which is still located in Ashton with a location near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Jack passed away in 1974. Jack and Helen raised seven sons and two daughters.
Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a member of the St. Mary’s Choir, and Catholic Daughters. She was also a member of the Ashton Study Circle, having held offices on the local level and county level.
She enjoyed reading, sewing, classical music, gambling, and golf. She was very musically talented, and could play any instrument, with the violin being favorite.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, John (Donna) Heiman of Sacramento, CA, James Heiman of Sioux Falls, SD, Deborah (Mike) Reiter of West Des Moines, IA, Timothy (Judi) Heiman of Sioux Falls, SD, Bill Heiman of Fergus Falls, MN, Pamela (Richard) Christ of Sisters, OR, and Ronald (Ann) Heiman of Sioux Falls, SD; daughters-in-law, Julie Wagner and Connie Heiman; brother, Paul Schechinger of Carroll, IA; eighteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 31 years, Jack; sons, Jerry and Thomas Heiman; grandson, Peter Heiman; three brothers, Leonard, Bill, and Stanley Schechinger; and four sisters, Joan Reiman, Hildegard Pendergrass, Marian Nehrenberg, and Betty Hoehl.
