Henry Bosler, Jr. age 91 of Rock Rapids formerly of Alvord, IA died Monday, September 10, 2018, at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2018, at Christ Lutheran Church in Alvord, IA, with Rev. Dan Kordahl, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery at Alvord, IA.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 13th, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.
Henry Bosler, Jr. was born June 8, 1927, on the family farm northwest of Alvord, IA the son of Henry J. and Elsie (Kock) Bosler. Junior attended country school at Logan #7 and at the age of 60 he earned his GED diploma. As a young man, he served his country in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953, and upon his honorable discharge from the service he returned home to continue farming. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann (Dehn) on November 6, 1955, at Christ Lutheran Church in Alvord, the same church where he was baptized and confirmed. They made their home on a farm for 8 years west of Alvord. In 1964, they moved into Alvord and he started working at the Farmers Elevator and in 1974, he became employed at the Alvord Feed and Supply. He served on the town council, church council, and served 25 years on the Alvord Fire Department. He was the caretaker of the Christ Lutheran Church property and the church cemetery for many years, which he enjoyed doing. He enjoyed bowling, doing puzzles & going dancing with Mary Ann. Junior was a 63-year member of the Dick DeBoer Legion, Post 704 of Alvord, where he served for 18 years as Commander. He also was a life long member of the Granite Threshing Association. In 2011 he and his wife were honored to be chosen as Straw Bosses for the Granite Threshing Bee parade. He was also a member of the John Deere two-cylinder club. He volunteered at the Alvord Food Stop grocery store for nine years until it closed, something he enjoyed very much. He was very active in helping with the activities for Alvord’s’ 75th and 100th Celebration. He and his wife were members of the Lyon County Historical Society. In June of this year, he and Mary Ann joined other long-time residents of Alvord on a float and rode in Alvord’s 125th celebration parade. He was the first-place winner of the full beard contest. The couple moved to an apartment in Rock Rapids on October 1, 2016. Due to health issues he entered Lyon Manor Care Center on September 12, 2017.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann Bosler; their children, Mark (Paula) Bosler of Larchwood, IA; Lori (Brian) Penn of Sioux Falls, SD; Jann (Dale) Haas of Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren, Nicole Bosler, Nathan (Brooke) Penn, Jodi Penn, Kayleigh Haas and Brenden Haas. 3 step-grandchildren, Justin Bouwman, Jami (Cory) Jensen and Drew (Christa) Bouwman; 3 great grandchildren, Brecken Bosler, Lily Penn and Kaia Penn; 8 step great grandchildren, Mitchell, Kelsey, Taylor Bouwman, McKena, Owen and Easton Jensen, Keatyn and Colt Bouwman; sisters, Irene Koch of Brookings, SD; Lorraine Gacke of Rock Valley, IA and Carol (Delano) Hinsch of Larchwood, IA; 2 sisters-in-law, Berdyne Bosler Dell Rapids, IA and Anita Bosler of Sioux Falls, SD; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Junior was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Harold and Loren; and 2 brothers-in-law, Don Koch and Cletus Gacke.
