Ida Langstraat

Hills, MN

     Ida Langstraat age 91, of Hills, MN died Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, IA.

     Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 22nd at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, MN, with Rev. Maggie Berndt-Dreyer officiating.  Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery at Hills, MN.

     Visitation will be Friday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills.

     In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials.

     Etheneja “Ida” Mouw was born June 30, 1927 to John and Geeritje (Vande Pol) Mouw near Beaver Creek, Minnesota. She grew up on the farm, attended Valley Springs public grade school and high school, and attended Sioux Valley Nursing School. She married Gerald Harris Thompson in 1947 and to this union were born three children, Judith, Jane, and Gregory. Her husband, Gerald, passed away on September 19, 1968. Ida then moved to Orange City, IA and later to Sioux Falls, SD. She was a nurse at Orange City Hospital, Sioux Valley Hospital (Sioux Falls), and area nursing homes. She taught nurses aid classes and Red Cross first aid and CPR classes. She was an EMT on the Orange City, Sioux Falls, and Sibley ambulance services. She served on the Osceola County Drug and Alcohol Board and was a Hospice volunteer.  

     Ida married John Langstraat on June 02, 1972 in Sioux Falls, SD, and they lived north of Sibley on the farm. Ida then worked at Country View Manor in social services for many years. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sibley, taught Sunday school and Catechism classes for many years, and sang in the choir and Senior Saints of Northwest Iowa. She was a member of the Reformed Church women ministries and was a bible study leader. She belonged to a weekly interdenominational bible study group for many years. John and Ida then moved to town in Sibley in 1996. John passed away on February 02, 1998. Ida enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidery, crocheting, reading, singing, and riding horses. John and Ida enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe and doing volunteer work in Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico.

     In April 1998, Ida moved to Sioux Falls and worked at Knopf Assisted Living Center and belonged to the First Christian Reformed Church.   She moved to Hawarden in April 2004 and belonged to the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church. She resided in her own home and then at Oakhill Assisted Living and Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

     Ida is survived by her daughter Judith Witcher of Las Vegas, NV; son Gregory Thompson (Jackie) of Hawarden, IA; step son Warren Langstraat (Mary) of Woodbury, MN; step son Arnie Langstraat (Diane) of Sibley, Iowa; step son Harlan Langstraat (Dorothy) of Rochester, MN; step son Vernon Langstraat (Mary Jo) of Erie, CO ; sister, Jeanette Skattum (Mark) of North Glenn, CO; sister-in-law Evelyn Mouw of Sioux Falls, SD; Hildegard Thompson of LuVerne, MN; Grace Sather Miller of Hills, MN; grandchildren Fred (Tamika) Miller, Brandi Miller, Brent Miller, Angela (Chad) Wurth, Scott (Tristen) Thompson; step grandchildren Jesse (Kassie) Boyer, Jared (Kassy) Boyer, Brian (Jennifer) Langstraat, Kevin (Kirsten) Langstraat, Heather (Rich) Reynolds, Carrie (Brady) McKimm, Mindi (Scott) Honken, Justin (Jennifer) Langstraat, Amy (Jon) Elser, and Mark (Melissa) Langstraat; 37 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

     Ida was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerald Thompson; infant daughter Jane Thompson; husband John Langstraat; brother Joe Mouw and wife Hilda; brother Edward Mouw; sister Dorothy Esselink and husband Gerrit; sister Trudy Trailor and husband Ray; sister-in-law Martha Paulsen and husband John; brother-in-law Vernon Thompson; sister-in-law Viola Leech and husband Glenn; and sister-in-law Ethel Sather and husband Harold, and granddaughter-in-law Taiyla Miller.
