Jeanette G. Popkes age 89 of George, IA died Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the Sanford Sheldon Care Center in Sheldon, IA.
A Prayer service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 29th at the Bethel Reformed Church, rural Little Rock, IA, followed by burial in the church cemetery.
Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 29th at the Bethel Reformed Church, with Reverend Scott Van Ravenswaay officiating.
Visitation will be Friday, February 28th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George, IA.
Jeanette Gertrude Popkes was born on December 8, 1930 on her family’s farm in Lyon County, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Martha (Ohling) De Boer. She attended country school there.
On February 14, 1950, she was united in marriage to Lammert Popkes and they moved to a farm 3 ½ miles northeast of George, IA, where they were dairy farmers for 45 years. To this union four sons were born, Dennis, Dean, David and Randy.
In July of 1995, Jeanette and Lammert moved into George and on August 12, 1998 her husband Lammert passed away. Jeanette stayed in George for a few years, then moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon, IA. Then do to deteriorating health she moved to the Sanford Sheldon Care Center until her death.
Jeanette was a life member of the Bethel Reformed Church, where she was a very active member of the RCWM, Dorcus Circle, church choir, Sunday school and Catechism teacher for many years and was a sponsor for many youth activities in the church.
She not only enjoyed her church activities, but she loved farm life, helping milk cows, gardening and cooking. Jeanette’s passion was caring for her rose bushes.
Left to cherish her memory are her four sons, Dennis (Linda) Popkes of Sheldon, IA, Dean (Nelvina) Popkes of Sibley, IA, David (Ruth) Popkes of Sheldon, IA and Randy (Teresa) Popkes of George, IA; nine grandchildren: Mathew Popkes, Aaron Popkes, Bethany Popkes, Caleb Popkes, Shannon (Mike) Anderson, Michele (Darin) Honkomp, Sonia (Dustin) Egdorf, Renee Popkes and Crystal (Tim) Waltner; twelve great grandchildren; three siblings, Edward (Faye) De Boer of Ellsworth, MN, Orval (Joyce) De Boer of Little Rock, IA and Gladys Drenkow of Sheldon, IA; sister-in-law, Donna Popkes; special friends, Jerry and Bev Kreykes; many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by an infant son in 1968; her parents, Otto and Martha De Boer; sister-in-law, Shirley (Mrs. Edward) De Boer; three brothers-in-law, Murnice Popkes, Wendell Popkes and Ronald Drenkow; nephew, Merlyn Popkes and a great-great grandson, Giovanni Leandro Aguilar.
