Johanna Loiuse Krapf was born on April, 11 1916, on a family farm near Ashton, Iowa, the daughter of Jans and Fenna (Luitjens) Van Loh. She attended country school. At age nine, she nearly died of scarlet fever with heart complications. She graduated from Ashton High School in 1934. She received her Associates’ Degree in the Science of Nursing from St. Luke’s Methodist School of Nursing through Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She wanted to begin her career at University Hospital in Iowa City; but an entrance exam revealed she had tuberculosis. After resting a year at home, she worked at Oakdale Tuberculosis Sanatorium.
During this time she met her husband to be, William “Bill” Walter Krapf. They were united in marriage on January 19, 1944, at her parents’ home. They resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa before moving to Sheldon in 1946. They moved to the farm near Hazleton, Iowa in 1949, where they raised their children, Jim and Jean. In 1969, Johanna and Bill retired, and enjoyed winters in Florida, Texas, and many years in Arizona. Bill preceded Johanna in death in 1979.
Johanna enjoyed scrapbooking, oil painting, and regular exercising (until the day before her stroke.) She was an avid reader. She was a woman of Christian faith and service. She was active with church activities, as a past member of the Hazleton Presbyterian Church, and as a current member of the Ashton Bible Church. She volunteered as a 4-H leader and was a part of the Hazleton and Ashton American Legion Women Auxiliary. She did a correspondence Bible study with prisoners and supported an orphan from India. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Johanna grew up admiring a plaque printed in German in her grandparents’ home. When she left home, her parents gave her one in English. It read: “Not my will, but thy will be done.” That is how she lived her life.
She is survived by a son; Rev. James (Cynthia) Krapf of Worthington, Minnesota; a daughter, Jean Ellen (John) Wenell of Albert City, Iowa; 3 grandsons, Dr. Karl (Celeste) Krapf of Lawrence, Michigan, Rev. Dr. Kory (Shelsea) Wenell of Glendora, California, Kyle (Katie) Wenell of Albert City, Iowa; one granddaughter, Kristen Walton of Des Moines, Iowa; 8 great grandchildren, Karlee Krapf, Chaise Johnson, Uriah and Jeremiah Walton; Dawson, Kensey, William, and Beau Wenell; a brother, Fred (Rose) Van Loh of Sheldon, Iowa; sister Marlene (Dale) Slykhuis of Sibley, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Johanna is preceded in death by her parents Jans and Fenna; her husband of 35 years, William; two sisters, Henrietta Van Loh, and Katie Rensink; two brothers, John and Reynold Van Loh.
