Karen "Kay" Jansen

Sibley, IA

     Karen “Kay” Jansen age 75, of Sibley, Iowa passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023, surrounded by her family at Country View Manor in Sibley, IA.

     Visitation with the family present will be Friday, June 16th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.

     Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2023, at the First Reformed Church in Sibley, with Reverend Troy Van Beek officiating.

     Burial will be at the Baker Township Cemetery, rural Melvin, IA.

     All monetary donations will be donated to the ALS Association Iowa Chapter in Karen’s name.

     Karen Kay Roede was born on December 20, 1947, in Sanborn, IA, the daughter of Herman and Margaret (Walker) Roede.  Kay grew up in the Melvin, May City, and Ocheyedan, IA areas.  She graduated from Ocheyedan High School.  

     On November 27, 1971, she was united in marriage to Stanley Jansen at the United Methodist Church in Melvin, IA.  To this union two children were born, Julie and James.  After forty-one years of marriage her husband Stan passed away on December 27, 2012.

     Kay worked various jobs throughout her life such as babysitting in her home for families in Sibley, worked for A & A Industries in Sibley, Super 8 in Sibley, Days Inn in Worthington, MN, Budget Host in Sioux Falls, SD, and then Village Northwest in Sheldon, IA. 

     She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sibley.  Kay enjoyed cooking, baking, playing cards, board games, puzzles, and was an avid reader.  She also liked planning family vacations, visiting with family and friends, and especially attending her grandkids’ activities.  Kay’s relationship with God, family, and friends were very important to her.  She will be greatly missed.

     Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Julie (Mike) Steichen of Sibley, IA, and James “Jim” (Kim) Jansen of Tecumseh, NE; four grandchildren, Branigan (Johnny Boogerd) and Carson Steichen, Matthew and Madison Jansen; five siblings, Sharlene Duis of Ocheyedan, IA, Bea (Don) Platt of Sibley, IA, Bob (Joyce) Roede of Sibley, IA, Rose Roede of Spring, TX, and Marlene Roede (Barry Johnson) of Mankato, MN; brother-in-law, Marlo Jansen of Harris, IA; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Jansen; parents, Herman and Margaret Roede; infant sister, Debra Roede; brother, Richard “Dick” Roede; brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Terrie Roede; brother-in-law, Kenneth Duis; father and mother-in-law, Eldon and Arloween Jansen; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sandy and Gary Widdel; brother-in-law, Steven Jansen; sister-in-law, Sharyl Curtis; and brother-in-law, Stuart Jansen.
