Leah Pauline Doorneweerd was born June 19, 1927 in Lyon County near Lester, IA to Albert and Maria (Knobloch) Wulf. She was raised on the farm and attended a one room school house in Larchwood Township through the 8th grade. On December 7, 1945 she was united in marriage to Dietrich (Dick) Doorneweerd. To this union five children were born. Leah and Dick began raising their family on a farm outside Lester, IA and in 1957 they moved to a farm near Valley Springs, SD. In 1966 an opportunity arose, and they would move once again, this time to a farm near Beaver Creek, MN where they remained until their retirement in 1997. On the farm Leah raised chickens and harvested eggs. Her family will always remember how she would fill the trunk and back seat with eggs and drive to Sioux Falls to deliver them. Sometimes, much to their delight, her grandkids were treated to going along on the trip. It was always an adventure for them. Leah enjoyed word puzzles in her spare time. She also enjoyed painting and hanging wallpaper for herself and helping others in their own redecorating efforts. Leah also worked at Hardee’s restaurant making biscuits as well as working the counter. On May 6, 2008 she lost her precious husband, Dick after 62 years of marriage. Leah lived in her own home until October of 2012 before moving to assisted living until August of 2018. She then moved to the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, MN. This past Monday morning, Leah passed away at Tuff at the age of 91. She will be greatly missed.
