Loretta Katherine Alma Schlumbohm

January 1, 1917 — March 29, 2020

Rock Rapids, IA

Loretta Schlumbohm, age 103 of Alvord, IA passed away Sunday, March 29, 2020 at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.

A memorial service will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 27th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Dan Kordahl officiating.

Loretta was born on January 1st, 1917 to Henry and Minnie (Mundt) Schacht in Alvord, Iowa. She was the middle child of eleven, with four brothers and six sisters.

Loretta was a baptized and confirmed member of Christ Lutheran Church in Alvord, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also an active member of the women's groups at the church. She believed that God was the main stay in every home.

She started her grade school years in Alvord and at the age of 12, her family moved to Eastern Iowa. Loretta attended Shaggy Hill grade school. She returned to Alvord and attended Alvord Public School where she graduated and was named Valedictorian of her graduating class in 1935.

During her time following graduation, she assisted many families with housework and assisted moms with newborn babies.

On August 5, 1936 Loretta married Rich Schlumbohm in Alvord. To this union two daughters were born, Jacqueline Kay and Mary Lee. Loretta was a stay at home mom, assisting her husband with his business as a corn sheller by answering the phone to make appointments and taking care of the books.

She was an excellent seamstress. She always made her daughters’ clothes, even her daughters’ wedding dresses and prom dresses. She also did some sewing for local people.

Loretta enjoyed crocheting, needle point and reading as well as babysitting for her grandchildren. She enjoyed all types of baking with cookies being her specialty, making sure all her grandkids got a batch of her cookies on their birthdays-especially their favorite. Loretta also had the knack of doing hair for women in the community and of course her daughters got the special treatment of pipe curls and a big bow in their hair.

She spent a lot of her time crocheting afghans for her grandchildren and making sure they each received a baby blanket for their first born. She finished the last one while at the care center until her sight failed. She will long be remembered for the special things she did for her family.

Loretta is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Heerde of Rock Rapids, IA and Mary Lee (Rich) LeLoux of Alvord, IA; eight grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; twenty-nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Minnie Schacht; parents-in law, Herman and Mary Schlumbohm; her husband of 62 years, Richard Schlumbohm; son-in-law, Kenneth Heerde; two grandsons, Jeffery Heerde and Cory Heerde; great-grandson, Brady DeSteiger; four brothers, Raymond, Vernon, Don and Jack Schacht; six sisters, Leona Mundt, Eleanor Baker, Irene Williams, Vera Nagel, Irma Stettnich and Norma Servold.

May God Bless her memory.
