Lubertha Boom

Lester, IA

     LuBertha Boom, age 94 of Lester, Iowa died Monday, November 30, 2020 at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.

     Family and friends will gather for a graveside service at 1:30 PM, Friday, December 4^th at Hillside Cemetery in Lester, IA. Pastor Steve Meester will be officiating.

     Public visitation will be Thursday, December 3^rd from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids. Due to the concerns with Covid-19 the family will not be present at the visitation.

     In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Boom family for later designation.

     LuBertha Boom, the daughter of Chris Sr. and Sarah (Miersma) Boom, was born on September 25, 1926 with her twin sister, Jeanette, on a farm southeast of the present West Lyon School. Her first year of school was at the Logan Township School #5 and then in 1933 the family moved northwest of Lester and she began attending Lester Public School and graduated in May of 1945. That year, she moved into the town of Lester with her parents and remained living there until April 2016 when she moved to the Lyon Specialty Care Nursing Home of Rock Rapids, IA.

     In August of 1956, LuBertha began working as a cook in the Lester Public School lunch room and when the new West Lyon School was built, she continued there as the head cook. LuBertha retired in June of 1988 after 32 years. After her retirement, she worked on Saturday nights as the "salad girl" in the Lester Inn Steak House and later years at Dutchland Foods, both in Lester.

     LuBertha was a lifelong member of the Bethel Reformed Church of Lester of which there were three different buildings over the years. She was baptized in the first church, made her profession of faith on August 27, 1949 in the second church and then attended services in the new church when it was built in 2010. When she was asked to be the parade marshal at the Lester Days Parade in 2019, she was so honored to do this and had a fun day riding in the parade in her hometown.

   LuBertha is survived by her nieces and nephews and their families of which she kept scrapbooks and pictures for each family of the activities they were involved in.

     She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Chris Jr., Louis, and Paul; and three sisters, Winnie Van Engen, Sarah Bouwman and her twin sister, Jeanette, who died on March 6, 1927.
