Sibley, Iowa

     Marlys Pietz age 78 of Sibley, Iowa died Monday, July 31, 2023 at Osceola Regional Health Center in Sibley.

     Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 3, 2023 at First Reformed Church in Sibley with Reverend Troy Van Beek, officiating.  

     Burial will follow in the Holman Township Cemetery at Sibley.

     Visitation will be Wednesday, August 2nd from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with the family present at Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley.

     Marlys Janelle Pietz was born December 15, 1944, at Luverne, Minnesota the child of Dick and Charlotte (Smith) Korthals.  Marlys grew up in Parker, South Dakota where she attended Country School.  She attended middle school in Lion, South Dakota before attending high school in Magnolia, Minnesota.

     Marlys was united in marriage to Robert Pietz on August 11, 1963, at the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne, Minnesota.  They made their home in various places following Robert’s employment before making their home in Sibley, Iowa for the past 46 years where they raised three girls, Julie, Jean, and Sandy.

    In the past, Marlys and Robert worked as custodians at the Luverne High School and First Reformed Church in Sibley.  She also worked in housekeeping at Sibley Specialty Care.

     Marlys was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sibley where she enjoyed helping with the quilting group.  She enjoyed word searches (she called it “circle word”), knitting, baking, being outside, watching Westerns, Polka music, playing games, and cards with friends.  

     Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Julie (husband, James) Fritz of Rochester, MN, Jean Kolbeck of Spencer, IA, and Sandy (husband, Joe) Schilling of Little Rock, IA; six grandchildren: Nathan, Ben (wife, Kristin), Emma (Adam), Brittany (husband, Thorn), Justin, Kelsey (Seth); one great grandchild, Dutton James Fritz; siblings, Janice Besta of Beresford, SD, Carla (husband, Todd) Myers of Sioux Falls, SD, and Richard Korthals of Parker, SD; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents, Dick and Charlotte Korthals; parents-in-law, Carl and Sophia Pietz; brothers, Darwin and Gene Korthals; and brother-in-law, Gary Besta.
