     Marvin Habbinga age 101, of Sheldon, Iowa, formerly of George, Iowa died Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon.

      Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in George, with Reverend Matt Polsdorfer officiating.  Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery of George, with military honors by the Jack Sauter American Legion Post No. 404 of George, IA.

     Family and friends may gather at the church at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning June 15th.

     In lieu of flowers, the family asks that the memorials be directed to the George Public Library, P.O. Box 738, 119 S. Main Street, George, Iowa 51237.

     Marvin Johann Habbinga was born on May 9, 1923, near George, IA to John and Anna (Stueven) Habbinga. He grew up on a farm southwest of George and graduated from George High School with the class of 1941. Marvin enlisted in the United States Army in 1943. He graduated from the Army Specialized Training Program at Baylor University in 1944 and was preparing to deploy to the Pacific theater as a B-29 Radio Operator when the war ended in 1945. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Marvin built homes in Sioux Falls, SD before moving to Los Angeles, CA where he worked in the construction field as a finish carpenter. In 1990, Marvin retired and moved back to George to care for his father. Marvin was an outstanding bowler. He bowled in many different leagues and in many tournaments throughout his life. Marvin was an avid reader with an interest in history. He enjoyed collecting coins and listening to his record collection. Marvin continued using his carpentry skills helping the George Museum, friends, and family members with woodworking projects. Marvin was a member of the Jack Sauter American Legion Post No.404 of George, IA.

     Marvin is survived by his sister, Margaret Johnston of Richland, WA; nephews and nieces, Dick Habbinga of Columbia, SC, Lydia Johnston of Spokane, WA, Darrell (Traci) Habbinga of Clearwater, MN, Debbie (David) Romine of Benton City, WA, Amy Habbinga of Burlington, VT, Mark (Lisa) Johnston of Overland Park, KS, Mary (Larry) Person of Sioux Falls, SD, and Paul (Pam) Habbinga of Boyden, IA; great and great-great nephews and nieces; and other extended family members.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law Lawrence and Kathryn Habbinga, brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Donna Habbinga, brother-in-law, Jack Johnston; and niece, Peggy Ann Habbinga.
