This past Thursday, Mary Margaret Boyd who was born April 16, 1945 in Sioux City, IA, went home to the Lord. Mary was the beloved daughter of Carl and Freda (Nonneman) Steinmetz. She is survived by her beloved daughters Melissa (Guy) Caslin and Kimberli Barnes, and Mary’s grandchildren, Austin Caslin, Michaela McDowell and Jaxson Barnes.
Mary was a lover of dance, had an entrepreneurial spirit, an avid animal lover, and Chicago Bulls fan. Mary imparted her strong faith and spirituality upon those in her life. She had an infectious laugh that would resonate through anyone around her. Her strongest attribute was her compassion for all living things and her ability to forgive. She loved watching sports and rooting for the underdog and when she wasn’t watching basketball she would find relaxation in playing hand held video card-games.
By the age of 13, Mary established a dance studio in her parent’s basement. After graduating from high school in Melvin, IA, she attended college in Worthington, MN. Mary’s path in life lead her to Chicago, IL., where she opened Mary’s School of Dance in the basement of her home. While in Chicago she also worked as a truck dispatcher for many years, a position she was very proud of holding. Mary’s entrepreneurial spirit took her to Prescott, AZ where she owned and operated the Captain’s Table restaurant. She later moved to northern California where she started a residential cleaning company called Mary’s Maid Service. All while raising her two beloved daughters.
Mary was a very patient and loving mother, who taught her daughters how to love, sacrifice and forgive. She was a stable figure in their lives, always lending a hand when it was needed. Mary and her daughters enjoyed their family time boating on Lake Michigan in their cabin cruiser, camping at their campsite lot in central Illinois, and family vacations to Florida and Arizona. Mary took pride in being a wonderful hostess and loved to entertain family & friends.
Mary moved back to Melvin, IA, in the mid 90’s, where she remained until her passing. She managed the Super 8 Motel in Sibley and many may remember her always welcoming smile while she waitressed at Jay’s restaurant in Sanborn. Mary also touched many lives while she cleaned the local churches and various family homes in and near Melvin, IA. Her attention to detail and special little touches made her services unique and exceptional.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Freda Steinmetz; granddaughter, Carli Caslin; and, brother, Gary Steinmetz. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and beloved cats, especially her companion, Kiki.
