     Mary Herbst, age 103 of Larchwood, IA died Sunday, April 26, 2020 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls, SD.

     Due to the mandated health care precautions, a private family service will be held Wednesday, April 29th at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of St. Mary's in Larchwood.  Burial to follow at Larchwood Cemetery in Larchwood, IA.  A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at a later date.

     Mary Agnes (Kerkvliet) Herbst was born on April 6, 1917 in Larchwood, IA, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Lens) Kerkvliet. She grew up on a farm near Alvord, IA and attended country school there. On April 26, 1938, she was united in marriage to John E. Herbst at the Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, IA. To this union two daughters were born, Evelyn and Barbara.

     Mary worked for McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD for thirty-one years retiring in 1987. After that she worked for Northwest Agency serving “Dinner Date” for thirteen years.

     Mary was a member of The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, IA where she served on the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club. She enjoyed crocheting, tending her flower garden, playing cards and BINGO.

     Mary is survived by her two daughters, Evelyn (John) Weidler of Howard, SD and Barbara Stoos of Sioux Falls, SD; special friend, Sandra Freed of Sioux Falls, SD; two grandsons, Donald (Betty) Weidler of Madison, SD and Dennis (Kathy) Weidler of Howard, SD; three great-grandchildren, Laura (Randall) Shannon, David Weidler and Eric (Jennifer) DeKam all of Madison, SD; five great-great-grandchildren, Bentley Marie Shannon, Nevaeh Jo Shannon, Piper Jean Shannon, Quinn DeKam and Danny DeKam and one on the way. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

     She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Herbst in 2005; four brothers, Gerald, Charles, John and Francis; two sisters, Dina and Catherine; and son-in-law, James Stoos.
