A Public Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the Jurrens Funeral Home in George, Iowa.

Maxine Groote was born on May 15, 1947, to Henry Edsel and Jeanette “June” (Klinkkammer) Van Drunen in Storm Lake, IA. That day in May that she was brought home from the hospital there was a snowstorm. She attended country school and finished her education at Sibley high school. Shortly after, she was united in marriage to Bernard “Bernie” Groote on July 21, 1965, at the Baptist church in Sibley, IA. Maxine’s first job was as a bookkeeper for Mauch Oil in Sibley, IA. The couple initially lived in Sibley, IA, and after their children were born, they moved to a farm near George, IA. She then stayed at home to raise their three children: Mike, Jeff, and Stacie. She also helped on the farm. The family attended church at Zoar Presbyterian Church where she was an active member of the Loyal Women’s Group and did Cradle Roll. She later went to work at K Products in Rock Rapids, IA, and then at the George Good Samaritan Center as a cook.

In 2020, Bernie and Maxine sold their acreage to their eldest grandson, Joe, and moved to their dream home in George, IA. Maxine enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening; but most enjoyed sewing, as she was a talented seamstress. Her 7 grandchildren were her pride and joy. She enjoyed making clothes and quilts for all her grandkids. Some of the best memories were made on “Haley weekends” where there were train rides, sledding, games, and of course- her famous scotch-a-roo bars! She will be remembered by her family as a selfless, hardworking, and talented person- but most of all she will be remembered as the best “Grammy.”.

Maxine was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in April of 2020, but throughout her battle with cancer, she never lost her faith in God. Whenever asked how she was doing she would respond with “I’m doing good”.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 56 years, Bernie of George; Her 3 children, Mike (Rachelle) Groote of George, Jeff Groote of George, and Stacie (Kelly) DeBoer of Ashton; and her seven grandchildren, Haley Jurrens, Jessie DeBoer, Joe DeBoer, Jill DeBoer, Whitney Groote, Mitchel Groote, and C.J. Groote; One brother, Keith (Janelle) Van Drunen of George, IA, and one sister Connie (Charlie) Putnam of Sheldon, IA; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
