Mayo "Pete" Mccarthy

Mayo "Pete" McCarthy age 78 of Rock Rapids, Iowa died Sunday, November 6, 2022 at Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids.

Pete was a native Chicagoan, born to Mayo & Alice McCarthy on June 17, 1944, in Chicago.

After graduating from Notre Dame High School, he met Christina Konz on Valentine’s Day 1963. They married on July 10, 1965, and spent their first 5 years in apartments in Chicago. Pete was a tool and die maker. They welcomed their first son, Michael, in March 1966, and their second son, Mayo Peter III, in May 1968. They bought a home in Libertyville, a northern suburb of Chicago, in 1970, and lived there for 47 years.

Pete loved cars and machinery of any type. Whenever he was figuring out when some event happened, he would recall what car he was driving at the time. Any American model made before 1970, he could cite engine type and other “interesting” facts. Pete also loved learning how things worked. Anytime machinery of any type was discussed, he was very interested. Pete & Tina began their own tool and die business in 1983, which operated until they moved to Iowa in 2017.

Pete also enjoyed Gunsmoke, a medium rare ribeye, NASCAR, and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Most of all, he loved his Lord, his wife & family, and his church. Pete was a man of faith and a faithful participant at Faith Baptist Church.

He loved his grandkids and enjoyed visiting with them. He taught his family the importance of taking time to enjoy life and loved ones. He was a proud, loving dad to Mike & Pete, and a generous, kind “Boppy” to his 6 grandkids.

Grateful to have shared in his life are his son Michael (Angela) McCarthy, son Pete (Rachael) McCarthy, grandchildren Erica, Rebecca, Paige, Noelle, Ethan, and Margot McCarthy, plus many other family and friends.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, November 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church. Family will be available at 9:30 a.m. for visitors.
