Norma Wassenaar

 Hills, MN

     Norma Wassenaar age 66 of Hills, Minnesota died Thursday, January 13, 2022 at the Hospice Cottage in Luverne, Minnesota surrounded by her loving family. 

     Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, January 18th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, MN, with Pastor Juanita Parker officiating. 

     Burial will follow at Flowerfield Cemetery near Hills, MN. 

     Visitation will be Monday, January 17th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Hills. 

     Norma Anne Wassenaar was born February 17, 1955 in Luverne, Minnesota, the daughter of August and Martha (Kruse) Schubert. She was raised on the family farm outside of Ellsworth, MN and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1973. After high school she moved to the Twin Cities where she worked as an admin.  In 1976, she moved to Rock Rapids, IA where she worked at K-Products.  

     Norma was married to Robert W. Wassenaar on March 20, 1982, until 1996. They were blessed with two children, Nick and Jessica. They lived just east of Hills for five years, before moving into Hills. During this time Norma worked at Austads Golf, Hutchinson Technology and most recently Daktronics, all in Sioux Falls, SD. 

     She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills. She enjoyed riding her motorcycle, baking and sewing. She enjoyed keeping busy with her hands. She also enjoyed time spent at Lake Okoboji. Her children’s and grandchildren's birthday were always very important to her. 

     In June of 2020 Norma was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer that later spread and was not able to be overcome.  She lived courageously and remained positive and faithful, even in the toughest times.  She was an inspiration to so many.   

     She is survived by her two children, Nick (April) Wassenaar and their two children, Hazel and Griffin, all of Luverne, MN and Jessica Wassenaar (Mark Haugen) of Edina, MN; three brothers, Randy (Jeannie) Schubert of Shakopee, MN, Gene (Bonnie) Schubert of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Roger Schubert of Valley Springs, SD; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. 

     She was preceded by her parents, August and Martha Schubert; former husband, Robert Wassenaar; and two brothers, Lee and Gary Schubert.
