     Peter Smit age 90 of George, IA passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA

    Memorial services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Jurrens Funeral Home in George, IA.

   Private family inurnment will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George.

   Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at Jurrens Funeral Home in George.

     Peter Smit was born March 24, 1929 in rural Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Dick and Bertha (De Jong) Smit.

     On March 24, 1948 he married Joyce De Zeeuw in Boyden Iowa.  Together they made their home west of George, where Peter farmed, was employed for Dreesman Implement and later purchased the business as Smit Repair.  He later delivered livestock to market for many area farmers until retirement.

     Peter was a member of the Hope Reformed Church of George, Iowa serving as Elder and Deacon at various times.  Peter was also a member of the George Fire Department.

     Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Joyce Smit of George IA; 2 daughters and families: daughter, Jolene and her husband, Rod Buck of Bellevue NE and her children, Pamela and her husband Larry Stone of Sibley IA;  Dean De Weerdt and his wife Jodi of  Madison, Alabama, and their children, Tanner and Zander; Jay De Weerdt and friend Ami  Steffen of Sibley IA; Amber and her husband Jamie Lindsay of O’Neill NE,  and their children, Mia, Reagan, Levi and Whitney; daughter, Debra and her husband, Alan Fettes of Spirit Lake IA  and their children: Tyler and his wife Julie of Sioux Falls SD and their children, Aubrey and Cameron; 

Joshua and his wife Elizabeth of Beresford SD; sisters in law, Loretta Smit and Hermina De Zeeuw; brothers in law and sisters in law,  Ken and Elaine De Zeeuw and Cliff and Arleen De Zeeuw; along with many other relatives and friends.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie and her husband Stewart Kuiper;  3 brothers, Tom Smit and his wife Gert,  Casey Smit and his wife Luella, and John Smit.
