Phillip Johnson age 59 of Melvin, Iowa died Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at his home.
Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11th at the American Legion of Ashton, IA, with Reverend John Pea officiating.
Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the American Legion of Ashton.
Phillip Leon Johnson was born September 19, 1960 in Sheldon, Iowa, the son of William B. and Clara L. (Wiersma) Johnson. He was raised on farm southeast of Ashton, IA and later moved into town. He attended Ashton Elementary School and Sheldon High School.
After his education Phillip moved to Texas and worked as a ranch hand and other various construction jobs. Following that, Phil served in the U.S. Army for a brief time. He then returned to the Ashton area and began working at Worthington Tractor Salvage in Worthington, MN.
Phil was united in marriage to Peggy Rae Boneschans on July 16, 1994 at the United Methodist Church in Melvin, IA. Together they made their home in Melvin while Phil worked at Terry Greg Constructions and most recently Popma Sikma Construction in Sheldon.
Phil enjoyed golfing, camping, hunting and going dancing with Peg. He also enjoyed music, bean bag toss and watching old western movies.
Phil was diagnosed with cancer in September of 2019 and courageously battled until this past Tuesday, January 7, 2020, when he died at the age of 59.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Peggy Johnson of Melvin, IA; two step-sons, Dusten (wife Tonya) Lamfers and John Lamfers, both of Ladora, IA; four grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Diana (husband Lloyd) Warr of Wichita Falls, TX, Mike (wife Donna) Johnson of Ashton, IA, Ben (wife Marsha) Johnson of Salem, SD, Gordon (wife Diane) Johnson of Canton, SD, Debbie Johnson of Lakeville, MN, Rick (wife Joy) Johnson of Villisca, IA, Kelly (wife Mary) Johnson of Ashton, IA and Jeff (wife Ona) Johnson of Harrison, NE; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Clara Johnson; two infant brother and sister, Allen and Joyce Johnson; sister, Barbara Kennedy; brother, Ken Johnson; and many other family members.
