Rev. Gordon K. Vickery

     Rev. Gordon K. Vickery age 92 of Sibley, IA died on Sunday, May 2, 2021 at Country View Manor in Sibley.

     Memorial service will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan, IA with Rev. Steve Swenson and Pastor Emmanuel T. Naweji officiating.  Burial will take place at a later date in the family plot in South East Iowa.

     Visitation will be at the United Methodist Church of Ocheyedan on Wednesday, May 5th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with family present.

     In lieu of flowers, family prefer memorials which will be directed to Gordon’s favorite charities. 

     Gordon Keith Vickery, Sr. was born March 26, 1929 to Walter and Edith (Steffe) Vickery in Sioux City, IA.  He was educated in the public schools in Sioux City, attending the schools at Bryant, North Junior, and East High, graduating in 1948.  Upon graduating he attended the University of Iowa for one year then transferred to Morningside College in Sioux City. On November 30th he was drafted into the Army during the Korean conflict.  On December 2, 1952 he was honorably discharged.  He went to the University of South Dakota and graduated in June 1955. In August of 1955 he entered the Crozier Seminary and graduated in June of 1959 with a Masters Degree in Theology.  He served in 21 Churches in his career. Many of which were 2-point charges, retiring at the age of 81.

     In June of 1954 he married the love of his life, Gwendolyn Ann Belongea.  They were blessed with six children: Renee, Keith, Kevin, Kenneth, Rebecca, and Kent.

     His first hobby was H-O gauge trains set up to play with.  His other hobby was clowning.  He was a member of the Shrine Clowns of Sioux City, and the Clowns of America.  Upon graduating from seminary, he moved back to Iowa and joined the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in June of 1959.  He retired in June 1993 after serving 40 years in the parish ministry.

     He is survived by his daughter, Renee (Bruce) Hines and son, Kent (Cheryl) Vickery; and many grand children and great grandchildren.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Edith Vickery; wife, Gwendolyn, children, Kenneth, Keith, Kevin and Becky Sachen; 2 sisters, Helen and Olive; 2 brothers, Walter and Warren.
