Robert “Bob” Wassenaar age 68, of Steen, MN died Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Monday, June 25th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, MN, with Rev. Maggie Berndt-Dreyer officiating.
Burial will follow at Flowerfield Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 24th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills.
Robert Wayne Wassenaar was born January 29, 1950 in Luverne, Minnesota, the son of George and Henrietta (Van Den Oever) Wassenaar. He was raised on a family farm 2 miles east of Hills, MN. He attended Hills Beaver Creek School and graduated in 1968. He served in the Army Reserves from 1969 to 1975.
Bob was married to Norma Schubert on March 20, 1982, until 1996. They were blessed with two children, Nick and Jessica. They lived just east of Hills for five years, before moving into Hills. During this time Bob continued to farm and also worked part time as a rural mail carrier. During the years Bob raised crops, had milk cows and in 2002 built a hog barn.
Bob was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, served as a deacon, past president and current vice president of the church council. He also was a member of the Hills American Legion and was active with the Hills Community Club. He enjoyed grilling, entertaining during the holidays, shopping, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a kind man with a great sense of humor and a big heart.
He is survived by two children, Nick Wassenaar (April, Hazel and Griffin Sailor) of Luverne, MN and Jessica Wassenaar of St. Louis Park, MN; two siblings, Marv Wassenaar of Luverne, MN, and Glenda (husband Sam) McGaffee of Hills, MN; and nieces Brenda Wessels, Wendy Stegenga, Katie McGaffee, and Samantha McGaffee and other extended family. Also survived by a special friend, Norma Wassenaar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Henrietta Wassenaar; and his niece, Tammy Wassenaar.
