Roger Lee Christians age 77 of George, IA passed away May 2, 2018 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5th at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, IA with Rev. John Pea, officiating.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 5th from 12:00 until the hour of service with the family present at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George.
Inurnment will be held later at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.
Roger Lee Christians was born October 8, 1940 in Sheldon, Iowa, the son of Gertrude (Kruger) Christians. Roger grew up on a family farm north of George and attended George Community School. He graduated from George High School in 1960. After graduation he drove a milk truck until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1963. He served with the 2nd Regiment 3rd Battalion 2nd Platoon stateside and in Germany until 1965. He then served in the Army Reserve from 1965 to 1969 before receiving an honorable discharge.
Roger was united in marriage to Carol (Geerdes) Christians on September 26, 1969 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George. They made their home in George. Roger continued driving a milk truck until he began working as a welder at Siebring Manufacturing in George. He then welded for 26 years at Demco Manufacturing in Boyden, IA. Most recently Roger was employed as a welder for Sudenga Industries in George, retiring in September of 2017, after 16 years.
Roger will be remembered as a good-hearted, hardworking man, devoted to his family. He was an easy going, people person who loved joking around with others and telling stories. Roger enjoyed fishing, playing games, watching westerns, and most of all spending time with his family and his dogs. He cherished his time spent reminiscing and creating memories with his family, which often included horse-play and pranks.
Roger was a member of the American Legion Jack Sauter Post 404 for 38 years, including time spent as Post Commander.
Roger is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol (Geerdes) Christians; son, Kelly Christians and fiance, Amy Venaas of Des Moines, IA; daughter, Cathy Bonestroo of George, IA; three grandchildren, Alicia, Alex and Ava Bonestroo, all of George, IA; sisters-in-law, Janet (Bill) Koopman of George, IA; Hazel (Joe) Martens of Sheldon, IA; brother-in-law, Silas (Maxine) Geerdes of West Point, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his mother Gertrude (Kruger) Christians; parents-in-law, Theodore and Caroline (Klaassen) Geerdes; and a great niece.
