Sheila Luella Soderquist passed away peacefully at Country View Manor on June 10, 2023, just short of her 101st birthday. She was born July 25, 1922, to Lee and Alice (Markuson) Kyle in Hastings, MN, where she was raised and received her education. Sheila grew up in the family’s restaurant business (living above Kyle’s Cafe) near the Mississippi River. Many happy memories were made living near the water and spending summers on her grandparents’ farm in WI. During high school she met her future husband Donald, where they both were involved in music programs. After high school she attended the Pepin Academy for Fashion Design in Minneapolis. On February 11, 1943, Sheila and Don were married while he was home on furlough from WWII, and they moved to Spokane, WA where he was stationed. After the war, they made their home in Hastings once again. Their union was blessed with three daughters and one son - Lynn, Leslie, Gayle, and Paul. A good share of their life was spent operating hardware stores in Warren, St. Paul, and Hastings, MN, Urbana, IL, and finally Sibley, IA. Sheila was a helpmate in the hardware business and enjoyed hobbies such as sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking, gardening and entertaining. In 2002 she started painting as an artist. Sheila was a 50-year member of Eastern Star. She was also very active in her church, First Presbyterian of Sibley, having been a member since 1963. She was involved in Presbyterian Women, Dorcas Circle, Choir, Sunday School, and she sang in a women’s quartet. She was also a long-time member of a ladies Bible study. Sheila was a good neighbor, a loving parent and grandparent, a life-long learner, and a good friend to many. She and Don were known as “fixer-uppers” long before the name was popular, remodeling a number of homes in Sibley. Sheila used her fashion design education throughout her life, not only for transforming homes, but also for designing her own clothes. She helped others of all ages whenever she could, whether it was giving art lessons to an aspiring young artist or baking goodies for friends and events. She loved her Lord and was looking forward to seeing Him face to face. Until recently, she was still reading her Bible daily. It is not often one gets to love a family member for so many years, and she was dearly loved by hers.
Sheila is survived by her children, Lynn Schram of Sibley and Paul (Gail) Soderquist of Mesa, AZ, and her son-in-law Larry Jacobsma of Sibley. Her grandchildren: David (Nancy) Schram, Clark Jacobsma, Deb (Joel) Hellinga, Pam (Dave) Kroeger, Klint (Becky) Duin, Bill (Anastassiya) Duin, Frank (Nikkie) Duin, Klayton (Angela) Duin, Peter (Jill) Soderquist, and Sarah (Jason) Ferguson. Sheila also has 27 great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, and many extended family members.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life Donald, who she was married to for 69 years, her two daughters Leslie Duin and Gayle Jacobsma, her son-in-law Harold Schram, her brother Kay and sister-in-law Mertys Kyle, her sister Miriam Sanford, and her parents.
