Sheldon Sandager age 94 of Hills, MN died Friday, May 11, 2018 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, MN with Rev. Maggie Berndt-Dreyer, officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Flowerfield Cemetery at Hills, MN.

Visitation will be Friday, May 18th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, MN.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Bethlehem Flowerfield Cemetery, Hills MN.

Sheldon Sandager was born March 31, 1924, the son of Nels and Clara (Skovgaard) Sandager in rural Hills, MN. He grew up there on the family farm and graduated from Hills High School in 1942. Sheldon enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and received training in Naval Aviation. Following his naval service Sheldon returned home to farm with his brother Vic. On July 6, 1947 he was united in marriage to Elnora Henke in Sioux Falls SD. They made their home on the family farm in Hills where Sheldon continued to farm and Elnora worked as a nurse. During this time they were blessed with five children. Sheldon and Ellie did volunteer agricultural and nursing work in Ethiopia from 1965 –1967. They returned to Africa from 1975 -1976 where Sheldon worked for US AID in Tanzania, and in Ghana from 1981– 1986. After his retirement from active farming Sheldon & Ellie lived in Herrick SD and enjoyed “retirement ranching” for a few years before returning to the Hills homestead. Sheldon was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Rock County Cattlemen’s Association, and the Hills MN and Herrick SD American Legion. He enjoyed farming, flying, traveling, family, and friends.

On Friday, May 11, 2018, Sheldon passed away at the Veterans Home in Luverne MN at the age of 94. He will be greatly missed.

Sheldon is survived by five children: Elizabeth Sandager of Sioux Falls SD, Robert “Charlie” (Dawn) Sandager of Hills, Eugene “Pucky” (Shirley) Sandager of Hills, Joyce “Jo” (Floyd) Wulf of Herrick SD, and Michael (Nancy) Sandager of Hills MN; thirteen grandchildren: Sheldon (Des) Norton, Carolyn (Cody Gossen) Starzl, Tarah (Jake Jaspers) Huston, Andrew Norton, Katie (Justin) Arndt, Lucas Sandager, Aaron (Melissa) Sandager, Brittany (Dakota Steensma) Sandager, Brianna (Sam) Maleki, Becca (John) Goossens, Maleeka (Ethan) Rozeboom, Nick (Emily Lichtscheidl) Sandager, and Kelly (Jamie Gieseke) Sandager; ten great-grandchildren: Connor & Rowen & Cullen Norton, Cate & Charley Starzl & Cole Gossen, Chloe & Jon Huston, Cassidy Arndt, and Sadia Rozeboom; brother Lee (Betty) Sandager, sister Anita Johnson, sister-in-law Bev Reinertson, friend Fraser Norton, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elnora, parents Nels & Clara Sandager, brothers Victor and Paul, sisters Lenore Hansen, Leona Goehle, Marie Muckala, and Beulah Sandager.
