Sylvester Harms, age 97 of George, IA died Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, IA.
Memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 14, 2019 at First Baptist Church of rural George, IA with Rev. Sean Mustian officiating. Family and friends will gather at 9:45 AM at the Jurrens Funeral Home in George prior to burial at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.
The visitation will be Wednesday, March 13th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George, IA.
Sylvester J. Harms was born October 3, 1921 near Aurora, SD, the son of John and Johanna (Meester) Harms. The family moved to the family farm north of George when he was 1 ½ years old. He attended country school near the farm. After school Sylvester helped his father farm. He also helped many area farmers including threshing with horses. Sylvester and Hiekelena were married March 14, 1944 in Worthington, MN. They began their farming career on the family farm after his parents retired. They farmed until 1988 when they retired and moved to their home in George. Sylvester was a lifelong member of Central Baptist Church in George. He was baptized at Central Baptist in August of 1947. He enjoyed playing cards and playing pool. He also loved his collection of toy tractors.
This past year they moved to Cobble Creek Assisted Living in Sheldon. After having a stroke in Nov. of 2018, Sylvester moved to the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon where he passed away on March 10, 2019.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 75 years, Hiekalena (Arends) Harms; two children, LaDonna Schmith of Boyden, IA and Gerald (Patricia) Harms of George, IA; nine grandchildren, Ron (Marla) Schmith, Ricky (Sandy) Schmith, Randy (Janet) Schmith, Lisa (Gary) Vanderpol, Ryan (Britney) Schmith, Roger (special friend Shayla Van Meeeren) Schmith, Teresa Harms, Debbie (Bill) Kock, and Wendy (Doug) Woelber; 23 great grandchildren; 22 great-greatgrandchildren; nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Johanna Harms; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruno (Anna) Harms, Jacob (Annie) Harms, LeRoy (Mildred) Harms; son-in-law, Dean Schmith; great-grandson, Ross Radell Schmith; great-great granddaughter, Destiny Joy Schmith.
