     Velva J. Korthals, age 89 of George, IA died Friday, March 6, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in George, IA.

     Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12^th at the Lyon County First Presbyterian Church, rural George, IA, with Pastor Brian Schafer officiating.

     Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.

     Visitation will be Wednesday, March 11^th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George, IA.

     Velva Joanne Korthals was born July 6, 1930 on the family farm near George, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Margaret (Duin) Blau. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

     Velva was united in marriage to Marion Korthals on Feb 18, 1963. They moved to a farm near George where she was a homemaker who enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, especially her roses. In 1985 they moved off the farm into George where she worked for Tarko Doll Company making porcelain dolls.

     Velva was a member of Lyon County First Presbyterian Church. She served as Chairman of the Serving Committee, helped with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was a faithful prayer partner to the youth club. She enjoyed making quilts, sewing, puzzles, cooking, and canning.

     On March 6, 2020 Velva passed away due to complications from cancer at the age of 89.

     She is survived by her four sons, Gilbert (Kathy), Marlin, Jerome (Amy), Randall (Keri); grandchildren Jessica, Abigail, Erin Korthals, and Kara (Wayne) Ruble; Zach (Megan), Jacob, and Olivia Korthals; Elisabeth, Joshua, and Emily Korthals; great grandchild, Isaiah Korthals; sisters Geraldine Harms, Nina Faye Zylstra; brother Harry Marvin (Barbara) Blau; two sisters-in-law Dorothy Blau, Nancy Blau; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

     She was preceded in death by her husband Marion; her parents, Harry and Margaret (Duin) Blau; brothers, Bernard, Kenneth, Frederick B., and Frederick D. Blau; sisters, Veda Mae Klaassen, Margaret Kitchenmaster, and Blanche Blau.
