Verna Mae Reck

     Verna Mae Reck age 88 of Rock Rapids, IA died Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.

     Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, March 25^th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Matt Polsdofer officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

     Visitation will be Thursday, March 24^th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

     Verna Mae Reck was born July 31, 1933, near Rushmore, Minnesota, the daughter of Venno and Florence (Reiter) Werkman. As a small child her family moved to Little Falls, MN, where she grew up and attended Little Falls School and graduated from Little Falls High School. After graduation she moved to Rock Rapids, IA and met the love of her life, Edward Reck. They were united in marriage on February 18, 1955, at Bethel Reformed Church, rural Ellsworth, MN. Four children were blessed to this union, Deborah, Edward, Nancy and Peggy.

     Verna worked at the Restmore Nursing Home in Rock Rapids and Central Lyon School in the school lunch program and later the Chase Bag Company in Sibley, IA.

     After her children had grown, she and Ed bought a camper and started to enjoy many weekend fishing trips and annual vacations with Ralph and Paula, exploring different areas of the United States.

     After a brief illness, Verna’s husband, Ed died on January 25, 1998. She then retired and moved back to Rock Rapids, where she took up golf and enjoyed more traveling with her friends to various places and abroad. Verna was a great card player and was always up for a game of cards with her many friends. Verna’s greatest pleasure was watching her grandchildren grow and following their many sporting activities. After the great-grandchildren began arriving, she became “GiGi” to them and they always brought a smile to her eyes.

     In December of 2021 Verna’s health started to decline and she was admitted to Lyon Specialty Care on February 21, 2022, where she remained until her passing on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, with her family by her side.

     She is survived by her four children, Deb Mowry of Rock Rapids, IA, Ed (wife Denise) Reck of Rock Rapids, IA, Nancy (husband Dale “Bate”) Sharon of Fairview, SD and Peggy Reck of Rock Rapids, IA; seven grandchildren, Lisa (husband Jason) Johnson, Laurie Mowry, Leann (husband Barry) Bomgaars, Shane (husband Jason) Spehar, Deidre (husband Jordan) Dammann, Ben (wife Lexy) Sharon and Joe (wife Whitney) Sharon; five great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Larry (wife Marilyn) Reck of Rock Rapids, IA; sister-in-law, Lucile (husband Art) Bosch of Rock Rapids, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, Venno and Florence Werkman; husband of 42 years, Edward Reck; son-in-law, Ron Mowry; brothers, Donald, Frank, Larry and Floyd Werkman; sisters, Ann Hallberg, Darlene Okri and Georgia Lange.
