Rock Rapids, IA Vernon Lorenzen, age 84 of Rock Rapids, IA passed away on Saturday evening, February 19, 2022 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids with Reverend Matt Polsdofer, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillside Cemetery at Lester, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 22nd from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with the family present at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials directed to Midwest Honor Flight Vernon Lorenzen was born June 24, 1937, in Lyon County, Iowa, the son of Theodore and Bertha (Wulf) Lorenzen. He lived on the Wulf family farm northwest of Rock Rapids in Allison Township and attended Allison Township #4 school through the 8th grade. After his education he remained on the family farm. He joined the United States Marines in 1955 and served until 1958. After his discharge he returned home and farmed with his father until 1963, when he purchased his own farm. In September of 1968, Vernon was united in marriage to Marge Lorenzen. They remained on the farm together until Marge’s passing from cancer on November 17, 2003. The couple enjoyed their winters in Texas from 1985 until 2000. On October 13, 2008, Vernon was united in marriage to Penny Borman in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Vernon farmed his entire life and owned The Snack Shop in Rock Rapids for a few years. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion in Rock Rapids. In the past, he was an advisor for Farmer’s Exchange Elevator. Vernon enjoyed camping, fishing, and being a part of bowling league. He described himself as “a stubborn German Marine who farmed.” Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 13 years, Penny; son, Danie Harr, and his family; grandchildren; and 2 special grandchildren, John and Armin; sister, Elaine Ault of Litchfield Park, AZ; and best friend, Tom (Dolly) Van Der Weerd. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marge; and six siblings, Theodore, Norbert, Loren, Kenneth, Dwight, and Donna.
