Donald Foley, age 87 of Los Angeles, CA, formerly of Sibley, IA, passed away on December 14, 2017 at the age of 87 in Los Angeles, California. Private family services will be held at later date. He was born on May 21, 1930 in Melvin, Iowa, but grew up in Sibley Iowa. The son of William and Goldie Foley. At 17, he joined the Iowa State Guard. After graduation he joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, California where he proudly served as an airplane mechanic. After he was honorably discharged from active duty in 1949, he remained on reserve status for 6 more years. While on reserve he worked for the US Postal Service for 2 years. He then moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a carpenter. He loved his work...especially when he got jobs from a number of Hollywood movie stars. He retired from the carpentry business at the age of 75. During those years in L.A. he immersed himself in doing all he could to fight for Gay Rights and the LGBT community. His tireless dedication to fundraising for the Aids Walk Los Angeles was admired by so many. He was motivated to take action after seeing so many of his friends, and especially his nephew Michael devastated by this disease. Donald is the only person who had walked the Walk since the very first year in 1985. He was even recognized by the Mayor of Los Angeles after his 30th Walk with a beautiful plaque. Donald had a great passion for gardening, going to plays and musicals, and listening to classical music. He also loved to entertain at his home with family and friends every chance he had. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Burdette Foley, and Roger Foley; 4 sisters: Lorraine Dresser, Kathleen Dwiggins, Beverly Klosterman, and Patricia Windes.
