Doris Margaret (Poss) Klaassen was born on December 7, 1934, in rural Ashton, Iowa. She was the youngest of eight children born to Frank and Regina (Gacke) Poss. When she was a few months old, the family moved to Sibley, IA. Doris spent her childhood in Sibley. Most of her activities were centered around the church and school.

She attended public grade school in Sibley but attended classes two afternoons a week at the church. She was confirmed at age 8 and could then take communion.

When she was in 7th and 8th grade, she ushered at the movie theater. Later she got to work in the concession stand. She got to see all the movies for free because she worked there and loved that job.

She met Marlyn through a friend and they were united in marriage on October 29, 1952.  To this marriage four children were born, Alan, Marty, Vicki and Shelli.

Doris was a Mother, Farmer’s wife, short order cook (John’s Steakhouse), Med Aid (at Village NW), Grandma, Great-Grandma, Foster Grandparent and excelled at every one of those jobs. Very few of these jobs gave her an actual paycheck. The other jobs were done out of necessity and of course, Love.

She loved music, sports, attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activites. The grandkids gave her great pleasure. She loved watching their school events throughout the years. She loved watching a ballgame if the kids were playing. She kept every little thing the grandkids gave her. No matter how small or insignificant it was. Some of her favorite activities were playing cards, mainly Rook, Funny Rummy, and Cribbage until wee hours in the morning.

She enjoyed working as a cook at John’s Steakhouse in George. She was so proud that people loved her food. She then went to Village Northwest and worked there helping people get through their daily routines.

When she retired, she wanted something to do, so she became a volunteer grandparent in the Sibley and George schools. Here she was referred to as “Grandma Doris.” She loved it when a child would suddenly understand what was being taught. She had only wonderful things to say about the teachers she worked with. What brought joy to her, was seeing one of those students grow up and come by and give her a hug.

She resided at the George Good Samaritan Society the last years of her life. She thoroughly enjoyed her table mates and was able to laugh daily. Every time we talked to her, she would say that the employees were so nice to her and would mention how hard they worked. She loved it when her children would take her for a walk around the pond. Doris passed on April 9, 2022.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Marty and Cathy Klaassen of George, IA; Vicki and Scott Hilbrands of Benton, KS and Shelli and Marcel Dirks of George, IA; grandchildren, Joshua (Melissa) Klaassen, Jeremy (Jamie) Klaassen, Lindsey (John) Hinsch, Courtney (Bryan) Mayer, Andrew (Ashton) Hilbrands, Brittanie (Derek) Hotz, Jasmine (Nathaniel) West, and Dhalten Dirks and (fiancé, Hailey Gorter); great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law, Annette Poss and Jean Klaassen.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Frank and Regina Poss; husband, Marlyn; son, Alan; brothers and sisters as well as in-laws, Maxine (George) Nanneman; Herbert (Mildred) Poss; Lee (Mae) Poss; Mildred (Frank) Hoffman; Eva (Charlie) Lodder; Lester Poss, and Wilbur Poss.
