Gertrude Turner, age 103 of Ocheyedan, Iowa died on April 6, 2020 at the Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, IA.
Memorial service will be Friday, June 26th at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan, with Rev. Steve Swenson, officiating.
Burial will take place in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan.
The United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan will be open on Thursday, June 25th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for people to sign the register book and drop off a sympathy card in memory of Gertrude.
Gertrude Marie Turner was born on November 12, 1916 at Wessington Springs, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Albert and Hilda (Jensen) Nelson. She lived her youth in Wessington Springs, attended school in Madison, South Dakota and then worked in a restaurant as a cook.
She was united in marriage to Harold Turner of Ocheyedan, Iowa on May 10, 1939 in Canton, South Dakota. They lived briefly in Sheldon, Iowa, Worthington, Minnesota and Luverne, Minnesota where Harold was a manager for grocery stores. They moved to Ocheyedan, Iowa and founded Turner’s Red Owl in 1944. They continued to live in Ocheyedan where they owned and operated the grocery store. Harold passed away on February 29, 1996.
Gertrude was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan and the Eastern Star Society for many years.
She enjoyed horses and loved her dogs. She was especially close to her Boston Terrier, Misty, that died 7 years ago.
Gertrude continued to live in her home in Ocheyedan and recently spent some time at the Spirit Lake Nursing Home.
She passed away on Monday, April 6, 2020 at the Lakes Regional Health Center in Spirit Lake.
Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Shirley Schroder; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Turner; her son Gene and his wife Carol Turner; her parents; two sisters, Sylvia and Lillian and their husbands; two brothers, Albert and Lawrence and his wife.
