John "Mike" Mayer

SIBLEY, IA

John Milo “Mike” Mayer age 81 of Sibley, IA, while on home hospice  passed away peacefully in his sleep early Sunday afternoon on March 17, 2024 and entered into his heavenly home.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at the Union Cemetery in Harris, IA. followed by a time of sharing and lunch at the Harris Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday, April 16, 2024 with the family present at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley.

 John Milo "Mike" Mayer was born to his parents, John & Elinor (Dagel) Mayer on May 30, 1942 in Sibley IA.  He attended, was baptized, and confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Sibley.  He attended Sibley school district and completed part of his Sophomore year, then went on to farm with his father.  

Mike was united in marriage to Mary L. McClain on April 17, 1966, and joined the Sibley United Methodist church.  From their union they were blessed with four children.  Shelly, Jimmy, Monty, and Mindy.

He farmed for ten years near Cloverdale.  After moving from the farm, he and his wife purchased an acreage near 9-59 corner where he  worked for Rehms & Stewart concrete of Ocheydan, IA for 3 years.  Then he and his family packed up and moved to Sibley where he worked for Sibley Concrete,  and later went on to work at Exopack where he worked up until his retirement.  

While living in Sibley for 45 years he enjoyed square dancing, soft ball league, riding his Kawasaki, playing cards, bowling, many family fishing trips to Canada, and enjoyed spending time with family, especially with the grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Mike was also a volunteer fireman. 

Being an ex-farmer he enjoyed taking care of the yard, landscaping, helping in the garden and with the fruit trees.  

Mike is survived by his wife of 57 years, (58 years as of April 17), Mary L. McClain Mayer of Sibley, IA;  Daughter Shelly (Mayer) Kass and son-in-law Don Kass of Remsen IA; son Monty Mayer and daughter-in-law Rachele (Smith) Mayer of Sibley IA; daughter Mindy (Mayer) Herrmann and son-in-law Tim Herrmann of Sibley IA; fourteen grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; his brother Jeff Mayer and wife Carol Mayer of Sauk Centre MN; his sister Cyndi Peterson and special friend Rod Halvorson from Marshall MN; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents John & Elinor Mayer, sister Mavis Walbran, and son Jimmy Mayer.
