Larry Hoekstra age 63 of Ocheyedan, Iowa died Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
The Hoekstra family will be receiving family and friends on Friday, June 7th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home, Andringa Chapel in Ocheyedan.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 8th at Jurrens Funeral Home, Andringa Chapel in Ocheyedan, IA, with Pastor Steve Swenson officiating.
Larry John Hoekstra was born August 21, 1960, in Seoul, Korea. He was adopted by Harry J. and Sadie (Bosma) Hoekstra. He was raised near Harris, Iowa on a family farm. He attended Faith Christian School and graduated in 1978. He continued his education at Jackson Vocational Tec in Jackson, MN, where he studied architecture.
He started out as an over the road truck driver and worked for several companies for several years. He then worked at Lake Park Kitchen & Counter. After a short while Larry started his own handyman service and farmed with his family.
He was united in marriage to Samantha Salzman on February 24, 2014, near Ocheyedan, IA. The couple made their home in Ocheyedan. Larry was a member of A.B.A.T.E motorcycle Club of Iowa. He enjoyed sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He also was a member of a band, in which he played several instruments and stood in for other bands in the area.
On July 23, 2017, Larry and Samantha while riding motorcycle were involved in a motor vehicle accident. Due to the extent of Larry’s injuries, he would never fully recover.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Samantha Hoekstra of Ocheyedan, IA; four sons, Kham (Kayla) Sounthala of Eldon, MO, Michael (Kathy) King of Ashton, IA, Michael Sounthala and Skyler Hoekstra, both of Ocheyedan, IA; honorary son, Jeffery Whelan III of Eldon, MO; a daughter, TaNeil Malcom and special friend, Devin Slykhuis, of Ocheyedan, IA; two grandchildren, Jacent Sounthala and Rylan King; sister, Gretta (Duane) Nomanson of Canistota, SD; mother-in-law, Verna Salzman of Ocheyedan, IA; sister-in-law, Ruth Hoekstra of Ocheyedan, IA; brother-in-law, Jerry Salzman of Ocheyedan, IA; sister-in-law, Lorie Breuer and special friend, Ted Klein, of Remsen, IA; sister-in-law, Crystal (Steve) Harms of Rushmore, MN; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Sadie Hoekstra; a brother, Robert Hoekstra; a sister, Beth Pranger; father-in-law, Mark Salzman; and nephew, Jesse Shipp III.
