Marian A. Schnepf

Rock Rapids, IA

     Marian Schnepf, age 95, of Rock Rapids, IA, passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in George, IA.

      Visitation will be Tuesday, February 27, at 10 AM, one hour prior to the service at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids.

     Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 27, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, with Rev. Matt Polsdorfer officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids, IA.

     Memorials are preferred, in lieu of flowers, to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Rock Rapids, IA.

     Marian A. Schnepf was born November 27, 1928, on a farm in Cleveland Township, Lyon County, Iowa, the third child (and second daughter) of Louis and Clara (Griesse) Borman. She attended country school and graduated from Rock Rapids’ Wilson High School in 1946. She studied secretarial training, before accepting a position at Rock Rapids State Bank where she worked for 8 years. While in this position, she met her future husband. She was united in marriage to Donald D. Schnepf on September 11, 1949 and together they made their home in Rock Rapids. Marian became a full-time homemaker to raise their family after they were blessed with three children, Randy (1954), Nancy (1955), and Paul (1957). 

     Marian was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids where she subbed as organist for nearly 50 years. Marian sang and directed the church choir, spearheaded quilting projects, and participated in various church women’s activities. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and golf, which she continued to play for many decades. Marian was also active in the Rock Rapids community where she participated in the River Valley Players community theatre, high school alumni activities, and P.E.O.—a women’s group dedicated to helping women advance through education.

     She revived her business skills by helping to manage operations at a KOA campground in North Sioux City, Iowa, during the summers of 1972 to 1983. Later, after Don was no longer able, she assumed the landlord activities in a share-crop arrangement on her farm in Cleveland Township, arranging for fertilizer, seed, and chemical purchases, crop sales, etc. 

     But her foremost activity was providing the foundation for a loving, nurturing home environment. Marian was active in her children’s lives serving as leader or helping from the sidelines, in the kitchen, or behind the scenes for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Girl Scout Troops, as well as various school functions and activities over the years, especially while her own children were participating. Throughout her life, Marian enjoyed reading, bowling, golfing, painting, sewing, quilting, and music. But the focus of her life was her family and their wellbeing. She took great delight when three granddaughters were finally added to the clan!

     Marian’s husband of 60 years, Don passed away on October 15, 2009. Marian remained active in the community and the church. On May 1, 2023, Marian entered the George Good Samaritan Society in George, IA, where she remained until her passing, this past Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

     She is survived by her three children, Randall (Anita) Schnepf of McLean, VA; Nancy (Joe) Stein of Plymouth, MN; and Paul (Lori) Schnepf of Lake Havasu City, AZ; three grandchildren, Neesha Schnepf of Boulder, CO; Rekha Schnepf of Lafayette, CO; and Mikayla Stein of Chicago, IL; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Schnepf; her parents, Louis and Clara Borman; brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Rosemary Borman; and her sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and James Eubanks, all of Rock Rapids.
