Raymond “Barry” Day, Jr. age 85 of Sibley, Iowa died Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Country View Manor in Sibley.
A public visitation will be Monday, September 11th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, with the family present at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.
Raymond “Barry” Day, Jr. was born on April 24, 1938 to Raymond Barry Day, Sr. and Nina Day in San Angelo, Texas. Barry and his siblings were raised in Arlington Heights, IL by his mother and step-father, Fred Peterson. While in high school, a friend of Barry’s invited him to a Youth for Christ event where he was introduced to Jesus and it changed the trajectory of the rest of his life. Though an accomplished artist in high school, upon graduation, Barry chose to become an apprentice brick mason and use his artistic eye to build things. He took a year break from construction to attend Pillsbury College in Owatonna, MN where he met the love of his life, Peggy Voss.
Barry and Peggy were married on October 22, 1960. After a brief stay in Denver, CO, they settled in Sibley, IA where they raised their two kids, Creig and Kelli. Barry started and ran a successful construction company, but that did not prevent him from pursuing his other hobbies and interests which included motorcycles, snowmobile racing, hunting, and fishing. Barry sought to master everything he pursued. His pursuit of tournament fishing eventually led him to a career change and leadership roles with Berkley Fishing and Ranger Boats. However, amidst these pursuits, Barry felt his most important responsibility was to ensure his family was taken care of and that they had opportunities to succeed. Barry’s favorite saying was, “You will have many opportunities for a successful career, but you only have one chance to raise your family.”
Barry is survived by his wife, Peggy, son Creig (Liz), daughter Kelli (Lee Westphal), grandsons Elliot Day, John-Luc & Christopher Westphal, granddaughter Anna Oakley (Frank), sister Toni Feasel, many other sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews (and their families including Jill & Johnny Stewart and Kris & Doug Burford), and special friend John Smith.
Barry is preceded in death by his mother (Nina), step-father (Fred), father (Raymond), sister (Kathy Slottag), and brother (Rick). A memorial marker will be placed next to Barry’s father & mother-in-law (Christie & Mae Voss) in Holman Cemetery in Sibley, IA.
